The writer of “Al-Rateb” is Muhammad Ahmed bin Abdullah, the Mahdi, a Sudanese leader, and religious figure who led the Mahdist revolution against Turkish-Egyptian rule in Sudan in the nineteenth century. His birth on Labab Island in the city of Dongola in northern Sudan in 1843 AD marked the beginning of a remarkable journey. He received religious and Sufi education in various orders, gathering an army of supporters and fighting numerous battles against the Turkish, Egyptian and British forces. His triumph in liberating Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, in 1885 AD and establishing the Mahdist state, which ruled Sudan for more than 14 years, is a testament to his leadership and faith. His legacy lives on, inspiring generations to come.
The Arabic word "Ratib" is derived (both as an adjective and as a noun) from the Arabic verb "Rattaba - a past tense meaning, "put in order". It applies to anything done, read, received, or given in a particular regular order of time.
